God in the Moment #138

Driving home from running some errands with my mother, we passed another man holding a homemade cardboard sign looking for money, food or work. My mom was sharing with me a story about kid she recently helped by giving them some loose change so they could make bus fare. You never know what the person seeking need actually needs, but scripture is very clear that we are never to judge the motive of one's heart. [READ MORE]

I dropped my daughter off at school this morning and as I was walking back down the hall to leave I noticed a sign on the wall outside one of the classrooms. I stopped to read it quickly and then proceeded down the hall to leave. I silently smiled to myself at what I read not wise to the moment God was using to speak to me.

My husband often works late into the night because he finds often that's when his creative juices flow the best. He has confided to me once or twice that when it's late at night, everything is quiet, it's like he and God are all alone. I can tell you from personal experience that it's a pretty incredible feeling when you and your creator are creating together.

I took my girls for a date to the park after school pick-up. We went to the coffee shop just down the street to meet up with a friend beforehand and then we would walk together to the park. It was about that time of day when my girls just need to run. As my girls and I sat waiting for my friend my daughter Avery watched as a young woman in a pink wheelchair came over and sat across from us at the large table. [READ MORE]

I went on an impromptu road trip over the border to pick up a few things. It's about an hour drive but it's lovely drive because other than my music of choice, it's a quiet drive. I don't generally have a lead foot on the highway so I was moving at a good (and legal) pace. I noticed a utility van coming up behind me very quickly. Apparently I wasn't moving fast enough for him so he whipped around me in three seconds flat. About ten minutes later I drove past him as he was pulled over by the police and ticketed for speeding. Sitting around the kitchen table this afternoon we were having a lovely lunch and tea party to celebrate all the Nana's for Mother's Day. My husbands grandmother was having a lively conversation with my husband about the good old days. They seem to talk about them often – the days of a much simpler life and the progress of technology this day in age.

Mother's day. A most beautiful day to celebrate the blessing of motherhood. I came downstairs to the kitchen this morning to french toast, hot coffee, and colourful streamers everywhere. My girls were excited and giggling at my reaction, my husband proud of his efforts. It was a sweet moment and I truly felt loved and celebrated. [READ MORE]

This evening we sat down at the kitchen table, as a family, for dinner for the first time since moving into our new home. As the baby was throwing salad on the floor and the older one was complaining about mushrooms even though there were no mushrooms, I made a comment to my husband that I think we've had a difficult time adjusting to the house because we haven't made it our home. The other day a very good friend of mine sent me a message looking for a little guidance. She is having to make some big decisions in her life and needed a little outside clarity about knowing when something is from God. And it's a very good question. When you are in the middle of a situation or circumstance, it's hard to know when God is trying to speak to you or show you something and when it's your own imagination hard at work. How do we move aside emotion and look straight at the facts? [READ MORE]

I was driving in the car today and as I was playing with the radio stations a familiar song came on. It's a catchy tune performed by a well known English folk rock band. My ears locked into the chorus “And I will wait, I will wait for you; and I will wait, I will wait for you”. [READ MORE]

When you're the newbie in a neighbourhood, you know it. When I was leaving to take my daughters somewhere the other morning a school bus had pulled up across from my driveway to pick up the neighbourhood children. I noticed how many parents were out there with them, coffee mug in hand, adjusting backpacks and blowing kisses goodbye. When the bus pulled away many of those parents milled around on the sidewalk chatting with one another, no one in a hurry to get back home. As I finished buckling my wee ones in the car one woman from the crowd came up to introduce herself. She was a very lovely lady and her introduction welcoming. [READ MORE]

For the last week my youngest daughter has had a difficult time adjusting to the new home. My husband and I did anticipate this but we thought it would be our eldest that would have the struggle. Alas, it was not. Avery has been a champ loving every nook and cranny of this house. All she wants to do is help and be a part of the excitement. The little one has been grumpy and out of sorts which has made the transition (not to mention all the work... living in a home while renovating is awful) stressful for everyone. [READ MORE]

It was getting late and my husband was complaining about an itchy face. He couldn't find his shaving cream and after I look in about a hundred boxes for the toiletries back up stash, I gave up and gave in to his pitiful face. I grabbed my car keys and headed to the nearest store to pick up shaving cream. My mother was over helping us unpack and as I was on my way out the door she handed me her change purse asking me to pick up coffee on my way back home. [READ MORE]

I sit down to write among piles of boxes on the eve of our move. We have a women's Community event happening at the church this evening but sometimes there are things in life that you just can't do no matter how much you want to. And I certainly didn't want to miss the coffee and chocolate coma going on tonight.

The sun was peeking through the curtains and my husband was trying to hide under a pillow. I could hear the growing murmurs of my little one across the hall. The longer her chatter went unanswered, the louder and whiner she became. The dull headache I have been waking up to the last few mornings didn't fail to make it's arrival. I pondered if this was the day that I could stomach coffee again. Coffee. My long-lost friend.

Tonight we had a celebratory carnival for our children's program end of the year event at our church. So many excited faces and so many little ones riding the sugar high of their lives. I was manning the the cotton candy station with a friend who lovingly informed me at the end of the evening that I'm not quite cut out to be a carny. I think most of my sugary stick creations were lopsided and uneven. My friend handled the machine like a pro and had the whip of her wrist down to an art by the time we were done. [READ MORE]
